An Instant Journey

Following Time 0 and Instant Choices, this is already the third exhibition in Luxembourg that Paul Kirps has devoted to the Polaroid format. After the Neumünster Abbey and the Galerie du Théâtre in Esch-sur-Alzette, this new chapter brings the work to a place that has held particular significance in the artist’s life since his youth. As if reaching the end of a journey, these small-format works seem finally to have found their place at the heart of the Cité de l’Image, a landmark institution dedicated to photography. For years, Paul Kirps has challenged the notion of Polaroid photography as little more than a medium for ordinary holiday snapshots—an association that still persists in some minds. He values the immediacy and honesty of this analogue medium, which allows neither filters nor subsequent retouching in Photoshop. With their iconic white borders, these small square images appear as windows or portals through which time, memory, and perception take on new meanings.
